Over 20 people came to help raise awareness of how much unnecessary plastic packaging gets discarded from just a small shopping trip and to encourage supermarkets to reduce their plastic packaging. There has been some concern that we, as a zero waste group, created plastic waste by participating in this demonstration. What we must remember is that we are addressing the bigger picture; it is important to highlight the colossal amount of waste discarded in the public eye. The waste we see in our bins at home is just a minute fraction of landfill waste that we individually create; combined it is a mountain of plastic. Furthermore, even if you and I manage to shop almost zero waste or grow our own fruit and veg, it does not mean that the average busy household can do this. Plastic free options should be readily available in the supermarkets to reduce the plastic pollution on a global scale. All those who attended were advocates for zero waste so we found it very difficult to purchase lots of packaged food, but we still managed to fill two trollies with the waste packaging after placing everything in the reusable containers that we brought with us. Carrying out a demonstration like this is powerful as it becomes publicised; ITV certainly would not have come to film one person choosing unpackaged over plastic wrapped - yet collectively as a group, through this demonstration, we have a stronger voice! The manager and staff were informed prior and they were friendly and understanding towards our demonstration and agreed to recycle the waste left by us. However it's important to understand that the majority of that couldn’t be recycled, which is why it is necessary to highlight this huge issue in public. We are truly blown away that this video has been viewed over 140,000 times already. With stories about plastic in the media becoming ubiquitous lately, it is clear that action to reduce plastic pollution is spreading across the globe 🌍 🙌 #zerowastebrum #plasticattackbrum #itv
