Photo by @brentstirton / An archive pic at Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage as caretakers interact with a newly orphaned Western Lowland #gorilla. It is suspected that this orphan was taken by Congolese soldiers who killed the mother to get the baby. When they were unable to sell it, the orphan was abandoned and the conservation rangers rescued it. Wounds from a rope were evident on its chest and back, the baby gorilla recovered, living full time with these doting caretakers who slept in the enclosure, caring for him like a human child. This little guy was eventually able to join a group of Western Lowland gorillas in another facility and become part of that group.
