Happy birthday National Geographic! To celebrate our 130th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite “firsts” in National Geographic history. This is an image by pioneering journalist Eliza Scidmore who was the magazine's first official female writer, photographer, and board member. Here, three Japanese girls in kimonos are framed by cherry blossoms, published in 1914. Scidmore later helped bring the trees to Washington, D.C.
